UC Berkeley

An institution that pioneered optometric education

We transformed their interactive footprint as they transform eye care.

Years of work went into these popular, long-lived projects.

Perennially ranked as the top eye school in the country, UC Berkeley’s Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science looked to funnel their considerable respect and public reputation into exposure to a wider group of candidates, and to showcase its research and thought leadership in the space.

As an established, trusted vendor with UC Berkeley on previous projects, Aleph was chosen to completely redesign and rebuild the school’s three main websites, with a focus on ease of use, transparency and accessibility. Our work on these projects transformed the online presence of the school as it celebrated its centennial, offering a wealth of information to several audiences within bold, ultra-readable UX paradigms.

optometry.berkeley.edu

The main web portal for the optometry school had a common issue; many levels of useful and important content, housed by a user interface that made it tough to traverse.

A primary goal of Aleph’s work was to take a comprehensive look at the site content and propose a grand restructuring of it, featuring a streamlined and accessible user experience.

The website encapsulates several important channels of communication, including up-to-date admissions and administration info, student and alumni resources, and a very active blog. Aleph’s design reflects the depth of this rich content without being overwhelming, and offers a direct route for users to find important information without limitations or barriers.

vision.berkeley.edu

The Vision Science program at UC Berkeley offers unmatched research and educational flexibility to its students.

As a highly competitive and sought after graduate group within the school of optometry, the PhD in Vision Science is focused heavily on research. As such, the program’s website needed to reflect the broad aspects of its faculty and student work, and offer flexibility in terms of prioritizing content and allowing users to easily find information both about the program itself and the important work being done by its members.

Our approach to the redesign and engineering of the site was driven largely by the need to present visitors with a bold, visually aspirational format respectful of UC Berkeley’s well-established brand and accessibility standards. What we built continues to evolve and beautifully showcase the incredible faculty, students and achievements of the program.

UC Berkeley’s esteemed optometry school also runs eye clinics that are open to the public.

At multiple locations in the Bay Area, The UC Berkeley Optometry Clinic serves primary care patients and low-vision patients with a full slate of services, and a network of specialty clinics for a spectrum of difficult vision issues. Their website is a vital entry point into their eye care program for all of their patients, and is heavily trafficked by those looking for quick information or appointments.

Aleph redesigned and built a completely new user experience for the clinic, prioritizing accessibility for those who are vision-impaired and with a content strategy that placed vital information up front and close at hand for all visitors.
